چکیده

In Part 1, we discussed the etiology and epidemiology of allergy. 1 This second part will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. Diagnosing an allergy is much fike detective work. The physician gleans clues from the case history, and confirms the clinical impression by using allergy tests that help determine the cause of the patient’s problems. Recent progress in understanding the basic mechanisms of the allergic reaction has made diagnosis, as well as controlling the unpleasant symptoms, somewhat easier. Allergic complaints are among the most common reasons patients seek the advice of a physician in industrialized countries. While some symptoms of allergy are not difficult to detect, many may mimic numerous other physicaf problems. For th~ reason, the diagnosis and treatment of allergic disorders can sometimes challenge even the most experienced clinician. But unfortunately, recognizing allergic disorders is often bungled by general practitioners. As medical detectives they are about as competent as Inspector Clouseau of Pink Panther fame.

Protein kinase A in the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus of rat contributes to regulation of rapid eye movement sleep.

Intracellular signaling mechanisms within the pedunculopontine tegmental (PPT) nucleus for the regulation of recovery rapid eye movement (REM) sleep following REM sleep deprivation remain unknown. This study was designed to determine the role of PPT intracellular cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (cAMP-PKA) in the regulation of recovery REM sleep in freely moving rats. The results show that a bri...

Spatial Learning Paradigm Can Increase Post-Stress Total Time of REM Sleep in Immobilized Rats

Background & Objective: Stress contributes to sleep-wake behavior in all animals. It seems that factors such as learning and memory processes can improve sleep disorders. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effects of stress and learning (spatial memory) on total post-stress rapid-eye-movement (REM), non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) and waking time in rats. Materials & Met...

The septum modulates REM sleep-related penile erections in rats

Rapid eye movement sleep in males is characterized by penile erection along with EEG desynchronization, muscle atonia, ponto-geniculo-occipital waves, and rapid eye movements (REM). The central neural mechanisms regulating sleep related erections (SREs) are not known. Recently, the lateral preoptic area has been shown to contribute in sleep-related erectile mechanisms. The present study was con...

Effects of REM sleep deprivation during pregnancy on spatial learning of adult male offspring of rats

Introduction: There are several evidences that show various environmental stresses during pregnancy, affect physiological behavior of the offspring. In this study the effects of REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep deprivation of pregnant rats on spatial learning of adult male offspring by Morris water maze were investigated. Methods: Water tank technique was used for inducing REM sleep deprivatio...
